about

Marianne Ploger is a pedagogue, music researcher, pianist, composer, clinician, and writer, whose main interest lies in musical communication. Inspired by the deeply impactful work with her teacher Nadia Boulanger, Ms. Ploger has sought a way to help musicians develop a highly sensitive, fluent ear and mind using the best of the French solfège system, rules of functional harmony, atonal theory, and improvisation, culminating in her book, The Ploger Method: Crafting a Fluent Musical Mind. Marianne’s Novel Method has helped hundreds of students achieve professional success as conductors, composers, performers, educators, jazz musicians, ethnomusicologists and/or college administrators. She has taught advanced aural skills for the graduate conducting program at the University of Michigan from 1996 to 2008, and later was appointed the Director of the Musicianship Program at Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music where she remained until her retirement in 2021. She is a sought-after clinician guest speaker in the United States, Europe, and Central America, providing lectures and workshops at major universities or conservatories. In 2018, Marianne received the Hall of Fame Awards presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
