Ever since Karalyn Schubring attended a dazzling concert by pianist Hiromi Uehara in middle school, she has made it her mission to spread the joy of creating music through composing, teaching, and playing the piano so that people can rediscover the engagement and freedom of childlike play. Drawing inspiration from nature imagery, improvisation, jazz-fusion-inspired grooves, musical games, and luxurious melodies, Karalyn’s music has received recognition from national organizations such as MTNA, ACF, ACO, and ASCAP. As a pianist, she has soloed with orchestras playing her Piano Concerto No. 1, and is a founding member of Front Porch, a quartet of violin, bassoon, piano, and percussion that encourages people to build relationships with contemporary music and the people who create it.

To me, one of the most exciting moments in any narrative arc is the comeback of the protagonist. It is encouraging to remember in all of our stories that while failure often comes more frequently than we would prefer, what is remembered is how we respond to adverse circumstances. Rise (2020) begins with some remorseful reflection, but quickly and confidently launches into a surging storm of excitement and celebration. It is a highly virtuosic piece that I wrote specifically for Drs. McAllister and Ames, knowing in full confidence that they always ‘rise’ to any musical challenge!
