about

Jim Territo studied composition at the University of Michigan. His works for band are available through Matrix Publishing, and have been performed at Disney Hall, Carnegie Hall, and schools around the US. He has collaborated with boy bands, Broadway singers, and Nashville recording artists, worked as a theatre music director in NYC, and his music theatre works have been published and performed at 54 Below in NYC, Planet Ant in Detroit, and on “America’s Got Talent”. Jim currently teaches elementary music and works as a music theatre and rock pianist in the Detroit area.

When the Heart Breaks Through (2019) is an earnest expression of hope and compassion in difficult times. Staying close to my wheelhouse as a songwriter, I wanted to create something for Tim and Liz that channeled their dexterity and passion, but was also immediately accessible and irresistibly toe-tappable for the audience. I developed the melody in my parents’ basement in Michigan, while helping with my Dad near the end. But the “writing” work happened mostly during a visit to NYC. Aimlessly landing in a gay bar in the East Village with my laptop, one fellow patron asked about the tune I was working on, and I told him “I have a good feeling about this one.”
