He earned his BMus from the University of Michigan, MM from Kansas State University, and PhD from Louisiana State University. Hughes composed S.L.I.C.E. (Soulful Latin in a Classical Environment) (2017/rev.2019), as a commissioned work for this recording. Replete with rhythmic figures influenced by Afro-Cuban traditions, jazz harmonies, and contrapuntal episodes, this piece displays a compelling blend of vernacular emblems and European compositional techniques. This blend is apparent in the first thirteen measures of the piece, as Hughes exposes pivotal characters: (1) the pervasive, syncopated gestures introduced in the saxophone and piano, (2) jazz piano voicings, and (3) imitative counterpoint. The jazz influence is even more prevalent in the intricate soli lines in the ensemble and the middle section which explores tonal regions separated by half step (à la Miles Davis, “So What”). The three characters are asserted at various times and in different textures, as one encounters episodes where imitative ideas sound simultaneously with familiar syncopated gestures. Taken together with an overall formal clarity, Hughes’s development of these three characters generates a fresh and stimulating ride.
