My mom, Beverly, was an oil painter. Her work employed bold colors and daring lines. She didn’t paint with brushes; she preferred creating art with palette knives. I composed this piece a year after she died. When I was composing, I was drawn to her dauntless style of painting. It was a nice way to channel her memory. Painting with Knives (2022) was commissioned by, and warmly dedicated to, my friend Tim McAllister.
